China faces U.S. debt default

China faces growing risk on its record holdings of US$1.16 trillion in U.S. treasuries after a White House official said Thursday the US government cannot promise it won’t default on its debt.
A downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt would put China's massive foreign exchange assets in peril, experts surveyed by the National Business Daily generally agreed.
Hu Xinzhi, a manger at Agricultural Bank of China, said a U.S. default would immediately impact the value of China's assets and send shockwaves through the world's second largest economy via trade and investment.
"Although China is trimming its purchase of U.S. treasuries, it has limited options," said Qiu Sisheng, a researcher at HSBC China. "Japanese bonds are not good, and Korean bonds are illiquid. As a result, the U.S. treasury market is still a better option."
