Hanergy, China's leading privately-owned renewable energy provider, launched two solar projects in Qinghai Province on August 29.

A thin-film solar cell manufacturing base and a photovoltaic power station are part of the cooperation programs between the Beijing-based company and solar-rich Qinghai Province, which were inked in December of last year.

The solar cell project requires an investment of 3 billion yuan and allows for the production of 300 megawatt (MW) in solar cells every year.

"Hanergy is bringing advanced solar cell technology to Qinghai," the company's chairman Li Hejun said at the launching ceremony. "Aside from that, Hanergy is building a photovoltaic power plant and will also invest in Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV), which will promote the commercial use of solar energy."

Hanergy signed a deal with insolvent German solar company Q.CELLS last June to acquire thin-film producer Solibro, a subsidiary of Q.CELLS. The acquisition gave Hanergy full access to Solibro's copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) co-evaporation technology, a technology that Solibro has developed over the past 25 years.

Hanergy chose to go with thin-film as Hanergy already owns some of the proprietary technologies, and thin-film is also environment-friendly, pollution-free and cost-effective, according to a press release by Hanergy.

Hanergy's strategy in the photovoltaic industry is in line with Qinghai's goal to build a secure, stable and renewable energy system.

Qinghai is one of the most solar-rich provinces in China. Grid connect PV systems in Qinghai generated 1.003 GW of solar electricity last year, accounting for 40 percent of the installed capacity of solar power in China.

These projects will boost Qinghai's role as China's future largest PV industry and solar power base, said Dong Pu, deputy director of Haidong Industry Park, where Hanergy's solar cell base is located.
