Burundi must multiply quality coffee trees in all villages and supervise coffee growers to improve quality of projects, Burundian Agriculture and Livestock Minister Odette Kayitesi said on Friday.
The minister made the remarks at a meeting in preparation for the 11th African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition to be hosted by Burundi on Feb. 13-15, 2014.
"The approach of the Burundian government in the coffee sector is to maintain and strengthen the quality of the Burundian coffee in order to get other markets and therefore incite coffee growers to increase their production and earn more money," the minister said.
A national census of coffee trees will be carried out, according to the official.
The African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition is Africa's largest coffee trade platform that brings together more than 2,000 regional and international coffee roasters, traders, producers and professionals.
Burundi's coffee is ranked among the best in the world.
