Myanmar to open more border trade points

Myanmar will open three more border trade points in the coming opening season to promote border trade with neighboring countries, according to the Ministry of Commerce on Friday.

Of the three new border trade points, two will lie in Taninthayi Region and Kayah State linking Thailand, while one in Chin state connecting India.

Myanmar authorities are negotiating with concerned neighboring countries to officially open the three new border trade points which will bring the total of such points with neighboring countries to 18.

Myanmar's border trade is being mainly done through Muse, Lweje, Chinshwehaw and Kan Pite Tee with China, through Myawaddy with Thailand and through Tamu with India.

Muse stands as the one with highest border trade transactions between Myanmar and China, reaching over 3 billion U.S. dollars in the fiscal year 2013-14 (April-March) as disclosed.

Meanwhile, Myanmar authorities is cracking down on illegal border trade, claiming that it has confiscated illegal goods worth about 16 billion U.S. dollars from November 2012 up to present.

Statistics show that Myanmar's foreign trade reached 24.963 billion U.S. dollars in the fiscal year 2013-14, of which normal trade accounted for 20.375 billion USD or 81.6 percent while border trade made up 4.588 billion USD or 18.4 percent.

The statistics also indicate that in 2013, Myanmar's border trade hit 4.68 billion USD, of which export stood at 2.9 billion USD while import 1.83 billion USD.
