US authorities have fined Avon 135-million US dollars for bribing Chinese officials.

The global cosmetics company paid some 8-million US dollars in cash and luxury gifts from 2004 to 2008 to Chinese officials to obtain a direct sales license.

Avon, the world's largest direct seller of beauty products, received its direct sales license in China in March 2006.

Avon's business in China has been dwindling in recent years.

The company's direct-sale model is viewed suspiciously in China, with many feeling the direct-sales approach is much like a pyramid scheme.
