In 2013, total world crude steel production was 1,607.2 million metric tons, according to the World Steel Association.

China has emerged as a major producer and consumer in 1970, and after 30 years of development China has became the biggest steel producer in the world. In 2013, China produced 779 million metric tons, accounting for 48.5% of total world crude steel production.
