China will implement its "strictest ever" regulation concerning registration of infant formula products next year, according to cs.com.cn on Monday.

The registration system will take effect as early as in May or June in 2017, about 6 months earlier than the date set by China's Ministry of Finance.

Earlier last Wednesday, the ministry issued a statement ordering that all the baby formula sold in China, including products imported through cross-border e-commerce retailers; will require a registered certificate starting from January 1, 2018.

All the dairy enterprises will receive an adjustment period of one year for transition.

According to the new regulation, each dairy enterprise should possess no more than 9 different formulas for their products with 3 brands at maximum.

It also says that the formula produced from abroad will be banned from being imported without registration.

Many experts believe that such a registration system will treat domestic and imported brands alike, give the manufacturers more right to speak aloud and also stabilize formula prices.

According to statistics, there are between 2000 and 3000 formula brands circulating in Chinese markets currently.
