A premature newborn weighing only 413 grams has pulled through the most critical first 100 hours after her birth amid intensive medical care, according to Children's Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai Thursday.
The baby girl has lived through the most dangerous first 100 hours of her life, said doctor Cao Yun, who led a team treating the baby.
The infant, 26 cm tall, was only the size of the hand of an average grown-up, Cao said. She was one of a pair of boy-girl twins who had only spent 23 weeks and 4 days in their mother's womb before they were born Sunday.
Both of them weighed about 400g upon birth and the brother died on Monday.
A group of experienced doctors and nurses are looking after the infant round the clock.
It will take more than 3 months before the baby can fully grow out of danger. She needs to weigh at least 2 kg to be taken out of the infant incubator, Cao said.
The baby is living on life support system. Doctors are working to prevent infection, maintain metabolism and ensure her nutrition, Cao added.
