Chinese police have nabbed more than 304,000 drink-drivers over the past four months in a special campaign for road safety, Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday.

The police authorities around the country have revoked driving licenses of about 273,000 drink-drivers and put 37,000 drink-drivers under administrative detention since Aug. 15 when the campaign was launched, the ministry said.

According to a survey conducted by the ministry on several web portals in mid December, drink-driving was considered the top danger out of 20 traffic hazards by 70 percent of the interviewees.

The number of drink-driving traffic accidents and deaths which came as a result, dropped 37 percent and 39.6 percent respectively compared with the same period last year, the ministry said.

Chinese police authorities launched the nationwide campaign to root out drink-driving in August, following a series of fatal traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers.
