Located to the north of Yangtze River, the old town of Huangqiao has a history of over a thousand years. It is famous for the historic Battle of Huangqiao during the War of Resistance against Japan. In December 2009, Huangqiao was selected to join "China's Small Towns" exhibition in China Pavilion at 2010 Shanghai Expo for its unique historic and cultural relics.
Huangqiao features an abundance of historic bridges, temples and lanes. The antique arch bridges shape the old town's classic elegance; the ancient temples give Huangqiao a holy aspect; while the winding and crumbling lanes are like the skeleton of the old town.
Lane Mi is the oldest lane in Huangqiao and has an antique feel. The old memorial gateway at the entrance of the lane, the traditional wooden doors, the shining wooden windows and the two-side walls of gray bricks provide a historic sense and reveal Huangqiao's colorful culture. Lane Mi is the site where Marshal Chen Yi and General Su Yu led the famous Battle of Huangqiao.
The ancient town of Huangqiao has gradually shaped its own special Spring Festival traditions and customs. Before the festival, every household will prepare steamed buns and make beancurd to celebrate the coming Spring Festival. The delicious Huangqiao baked cake has been popular all around China since the Battle of Huangqiao. Wonton is a must for the Eve of Chinese New Year and morning jujube tea for the first day of Chinese New Year.
