Racing dragon boats is a traditional folk sport in the Dragon Boat Festival which falls on June 16 this year. As one of the most important scenic spots in Xinjiang, the Bosten Lake Gold Beach Resort in northwest China's Xinjiang will host a large-scale dragon boat contest for this year’s festival that will let more visitors experience the fun of traveling on water.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in lunar Chinese calendar, commemorates the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan. The focus of the celebration includes eating the rice dumpling zongzi and racing dragon boats.

The lake was once named "West Sea" and "Fish Sea," and was finally named "Bosten Lake" in the nid-Qing Dynasty. Covering about 1,000 sq. km, it is the largest lake in Xinjiang and the largest inland freshwater lake in China. More than 10 scenic spots have been developed, but Golden Beach Resort is the oldest and largest scenic area.

According to the Managing Committee of the Golden Beach Resort, in addition to the boat racing contest, visitors can join in other activities, such as a beer drinking game, a bonfire party and tug-of-war on the lake.

"A large number of people will join in the dragon boat competition and we provide fat bonus. It will be a fierce competition," said He Zhijiong, general manager of the Golden Beach Travel Agency.
