The family of a man who was killed and his son injured by tigers at a zoo in northwest China's Shaanxi Province were compensated with 430,000 yuan (63,000 U.S. dollars) Sunday, a zoo official said Monday.

Zhang Changqian, 45, and his 17-year-old son, Zhang Yongxin, were mauled on June 13 by five tigers after straying into a tiger area, the gates of which were not shut, at the Xi'an Qinling Wildlife Park in the provincial capital Xi'an.

Liang Guangzhou, who controlled gates, was detained by the municipal police on June 14, one day after the tragedy, said police spokesperson.

The zoo compensated Zhang's family with the entire amount Sunday after a series of negotiations, said zoo official Jiao Congling.

One of the general manager's assistants and an animal department manager were also fired, Jiao said.

The father was taking his son for an outing after the son had just sat the national college entrance exam.
