The government of Macao Special administrative Region (SAR) will give greater policy and resource support for local higher education institutions, which was part of the government's effort to nurture local talents, said Chui Sai On, the Macao SAR's Chief Executive, on Thursday.

Chui made the promise when he met with the heads of nine local higher education institutions, including the University of Macao, the Macao Polytechnic Institute and Macao University of Science and Technology.

During the meeting they discussed the issues of local higher education's future development, the challenges of running these institutions in Macao, and nurturing of talents.

Be it public or private, the SAR government will support these institutions, since they shoulder the mission of nurturing local talents, said the chief executive.

Latest figures from the SAR's Statistics and Census Service indicated that there were 12 institutions of higher education in the 2008/2009 academic year, with 1,812 teachers and 20,917 students, resulting in a teacher/student ratio of one to 11.5.

Chui also said that continuing education should also be strengthened and will consider allocating more resources to encouraging the needed to receive and complete higher education.
