He eventually won one silver and two gold medals at the national championships for the disabled.
"Many people think that I have a gift for sports, in fact, I have just practiced much more than others," Liu said.
Liu's next goal was to win gold at the 2008 Paralympics; however, he had to give up swimming due to allergy complications.
At 19, Liu decided he would play the piano, and initially only his mother supported this endeavor. She didn't simply support him with motherly words of encouragement – she bought him a 10,000 yuan piano.
He and his mother modified the piano so he could position his feet on the keys.
"I could not play very well at the beginning; my feet cramped," Liu said. "I learned how to control the keys by using my toes after I had practiced a lot."
He practiced. And he practiced. And he ignored those who said he couldn't do it.
"Many people thought it was impossible, but I had never thought about the difficulties, and I wouldn't give up," Liu said.
One year later he performed on a TV talk show and never looked back.
These days, Liu receives millions of messages from fans and many invitations from TV stations.
"The most important thing for me is to have good musical works. I should be a leader of the stage instead of a performer," Liu said. "I will continue my efforts in music no matter if I can be successful or not in the future."
