Residents around a mountain in Henan Province, popular for having a high number of quarry sites and being the home of legendary Chinese Yellow Emperor, are complaining that miners are endangering the officially protected site and hurting the environment, the China National Radio reported Thursday.
In Juci Mountain in Xinzheng, it is common to see mountaintops razed by dozens of quarry operations and it's not new. In fact, it began 10 years ago and only one operator passed an environmental assessment.
"You see how many decrepit houses are in my village, but nobody cares about them," a resident from Shigudui village said to the report.
Many residents complained they've seen cracks on their walls caused by the explosives used in the quarry operations. Quarries are sources of rocks and other building materials.
More than a dozen quarry companies reportedly operate in the area and each company hauls away at least 12 tons of rock every year.
Xinzheng was declared a national cultural heritage site in May 2006. Juci Mountain is home to the legendary figure considered the ancestor of all Chinese in mythology.
Zhao Yanwei of Xinzheng Land and Resources Bureau said that the quarries are located 9 kilometers away so the industry has no influence on people in Juci.
