China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Tuesday it had injected another 1.22 billion yuan (183.69 million U.S. dollars) into an allowance scheme for college graduates working as teachers in rural areas.
This brought the total amount allocated by the MOF in 2010 from the central budget for college graduates-turned rural teachers to 3.05 billion yuan, according to a statement of the MOF website.
To improve the quality of rural education, the central government rolled out a nationwide program in 2005 which provides incentives to encourage college graduates to work as teachers in rural areas.
The 3.05 billion yuan was 830 million yuan, or 37.4 percent, higher from 2009, and meant each of the 148,000 graduates-turned teachers get a 20,540-yuan allowance in 2010, said the MOF.
Last week, the ministry announced an injection of an extra 10.5 billion yuan, on the basis of 63.52 billion yuan already earmarked this year, from the central budget to support nine-year compulsory education for all students in the country's rural areas.
