A disgruntled man was killed on the campus of Tianjin Normal University after he tried to detonate a homemade bomb in the office of the president.

Guangdong-based Southern Metropolis Daily reported Thursday that the man, who had a dispute with the university over property issues, took a bottle of gasoline to a meeting inside the president's office on Monday.

However, the bottle exploded and killed the man without injuring the president, the paper reported.

The incident happened Friday, but there was no report of it until Internet users posted threads online Thursday.

An unidentified police officer at the police station in Xiqing district, where the university is located, confirmed to the paper that an explosion occurred in the school, but refused to give details.

"He just throw the gasoline, but he died afterwards," the officer said.

A teacher at the university who refused to be identified also confirmed the incident.

The teacher said no one else was injured and police did not confirm the teacher's account.

The police officer said the attacker was a commercial tenant in the university, and he was frustrated the university refused to renew his lease.

Calls by the Global Times to the university and the police stations were not successful Thursday.

The university did not offer an explanation about the incident.
