Chinese police are looking for people involved in a fight in southern Guangdong Province that led to the death of a Uygur street peddler from northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The fight occurred at about 4 a.m. Thursday near a market in downtown Huizhou. A dispute sparked the brawl between two groups of peddlers, one from Xinjiang and the other from central Hunan Province, the Huizhou Municipal Public Security said in a statement Saturday.

Police found an injured Uygur peddler lying on the ground when they arrived, but no Hunan peddlers as they had fled the scene.

The Uygur man was rushed to hospital but died after emergency treatment, the statement said.

Six other people from Xinjiang, whose nationalities were not revealed, suffered minor injuries and are being treated at a local hospital. They are said to be in a stable condition.

Local police have set up a task force to investigate the case and hunt for those on the run, the statement said.

Police did not reveal the number of Hunan peddlers involved.
