Mobile phone operators were condemned for negligence towards pornographic mobile websites by a research team with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Global Times learnt Wednesday.
The condemnation stems from the monitoring report of illegal and harmful information in mobile websites (volume 3 2010), issued by the Internet information security research team under CAS.
Among 2,700 mobile websites checked between August and November, over 270 were found spreading pornographic content. "The report has been handed to police, who are ex-pected to take action," said Li Qiang, the research leader.
The research team also exposed detailed personal information of a group of directors in charge of such websites. ID, bank account and phone numbers of over 10 people involved were disclosed.
Su Hongxin, a lawyer from the Beijing Yingke Law Firm, said people involved in the websites could be charged with the crime of spreading pornographic material.
The Beijing branch of China Mobile was accused of charging users who downloaded services from pornographic websites.
Wang Jianzhou, President of China Mobile, said in 2009 that they had pledged another 100 million yuan ($15 million) to combating pornographic websites on mobile phones, and that "[China Mobile] would never indulge these websites for the sake of profit."
China Mobile could not be reached Wednesday.
