Southwest China's Guizhou Province hopes to become a major vegetable supplier to Hong Kong, with annual sales of 700 to 800 tonnes over the coming two years to the Special Administrative Region.

Last year, the province supplied at least 240 tonnes of pollution-free vegetables to Hong Kong, up 61 percent from 2009, according to the provincial inspection and quarantine bureau.

All exported fruit and vegetables are quarantined at the bureau to ensure international standards.

The province currently has just one registered vegetable base supplying the Hong Kong market, the local government said.

Hongfenghu Vegetable Base in Qingzhen City near provincial capital Guiyang began selling green vegetables to Hong Kong in 2009. Its products are quarantined in Guiyang and repackaged in Guangdong Province before entering Hong Kong.

The base earned 8 million yuan from sales to Hong Kong last year.
