Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for all-out measures to help those affected by the 5.8-magnitude earthquake in southwestern Yunnan Province.

Xi ordered government officials and Party members to take the lead in quake-relief efforts and ensure adequate food, clean water and clothes for the affected people.

At least 24 people were killed and more than 200 others injured in the earthquake that jolted Yingjiang County in Yunnan Province around Thursday noon.

The vice president made the remarks when joined a panel discussion with the delegation from Yunnan to the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, which is convening its annual session in Beijing.

He called on Yunnan to seize the opportunity provided by the nation's strategy of furthering the development of the western region to embark on the road of sustainable development.
