China reports 37 organ donations during one year trial

Thirty-seven Chinese citizens donated organs since the country started a trial project for human organ donations last March, according to the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) in Beijing on Thursday.
The donated organs included livers, kidneys, hearts, skin and corneas, said an RCSC statement.
Among the donors, 19 were in south China's Guangdong Province, five were in Tianjin Municipality in north China, five in central Hunan Province, three in northeastern Liaoning Province, three in eastern Zhejiang Province, one in central Hubei Province and one in eastern Shandong Province, the statement said.
The country started a trial program for human organ donations in 11 provinces and municipalities on March 2, 2010. The RCSC is in charge of the donation program.
The country has amended the regulations for human organ transplants while regulations for the registration of human organ donors has been drafted.
However, the number of donations remained few. Sometimes, the donors register for donations, but their families later refuse to fulfill the request because of the tradition of keeping the body of their loved ones intact.
Vice Health Minister Huang Jiefu told Xinhua on Monday that the health department is considering giving financial assistance to donors and their families to encourage donations.
Donors and their families might receive a reduction in the cost of medical care and funerals, as well as preferential policies for health insurance and taxation, he said.
