China's nationwide campaign to reinforce buildings at primary and high schools has assisted with 65,000 schools meeting the standards for withstanding earthquakes, said Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong on Tuesday.
Liu, who was performing an inspection tour of local schools in Taiyuan and Xinzhou cities in north China's Shanxi Province, said that nearly 50 million students benefited from the campaign that was launched over one year ago.
China, as a country that frequently experiences natural disasters such as earthquake, landslides, floods and typhoons, considers disaster prevention and alleviation to be an important task, Liu said.
The school house reinforcement campaign would help ensure the safety of students when disasters strike, she noted.
