9 die from carbon monoxide poisoning in N. China

Nine people were killed and eight others were under emergency treatment after being poisoned by carbon monoxide on Tuesday in north China's Shanxi Province, said local authorities.

The accident happened at 1:24 p.m. at a power plant operated by Shanxi Antai Group Co., Ltd. in Jiexiu City, said a spokesman with the city's government.

Fifteen workers were repairing a boiler at the plant when the accident happened. Two others, who came to rescue, were also poisoned, said the spokesman.

By 2:20 p.m., nine had been confirmed dead from the poisoning, the spokesman said. Eight others are under emergency treatment in the hospital.
