An expo promoting healthy lifestyles will be held in Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang province, in November, China National Radio (CNR) reports.

Organizers of the International Healthy Lifestyle Expo plan to invite dozens of medical experts to communicate with visitors face-to-face every day during the health-themed expo for the public good on November 17-20. New technologies and products on healthcare and disease prevention will be displayed at the event, the report said.

During an expo press conference Wednesday in Beijing, Cai Jiming, Vice President of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), said China has an estimated 90 million diabetics, while 160 million people suffer from hypertension. In addition, the number of overweight Chinese adults has increased to some 200 million, accounting for more than 22 percent of the total of adults, while the number of obese citizens is over 60 million, accounting for 7 percent, he added.

Cai noted that unhealthy lifestyles that included smoking, an unbalanced diet and lack of exercise have led to widespread diseases ranging from hypertension to diabetes to obesity and placed heavy burdens on the national healthcare budget. Most people in the country put more emphasis on cures and treatments than disease prevention, which leads to an unnecessary waste of social resources.

In an effort to change the situation, China is holding the International Healthy Lifestyle Expo this year to popularize knowledge and products about disease prevention. The first expo of this kind was held in Shanghai in April 2009.

The sponsors of this year's expo include the Health Ministry, Ministry of Science and Technology, General Administration of Sport, China Association for Science and Technology and Zhejiang provincial government, according to the report.
