China's Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu has urged local police to adopt "resolute and effective" measures to fight crimes and strengthen a sense of security among local people.

"Police must fully realize the requirements and challenges in the work of maintaining stability in the new situation, and improve their abilities to ensure national security and social stability," Meng said Sunday at a meeting during his visit in the city of Kashgar in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Meng called on police to unite with and reply on local people of different ethnic groups and take resolute and effective measures to crack down on various criminal activities and strengthen local people's sense of security.

During his trip, Meng also visited local residents, ethnic craftwork markets and mosques in Kashgar.
