A total of 103 cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections, comprising 77 males and 26 females, were reported in Hong Kong in the first quarter this year, bringing the cumulative total number to 4,935 since 1984, said the Centre for Health Protection on Thursday.

Of the 103 cases, 22 acquired the infection via heterosexual contact, 41 via homosexual or bisexual contact, three through drug injection and two through blood or blood products infusion.

Thirteen new cases of AIDS were reported in the first quarter, bringing to 1,198 the total number of confirmed AIDS cases reported since 1985.

Nine of the new cases were related to homosexual or bisexual contact.

The centre's Consultant Wong Ka-hing said sexual contact continued to be the major mode of HIV transmission in Hong Kong. He stressed the importance of proper use of condoms in reducing the risk of HIV infection.
