The Chinese government, drawing lessons from Japan's recent Fukushima nuclear crisis, is working on nuclear safety planning and conducting more regular safety inspections for nuclear facilities, a senior official said in Beijing on Friday.
Vice Minister of Environmental Protection Li Ganjie made the remarks at a press conference, saying the Japanese crisis will certainly have a major impact on countries around the world, including China, in developing nuclear power.
Li said nuclear safety awareness and safety standards must be improved. He also called for tightened supervision, more effective emergency response mechanisms, enhanced information disclosure and international cooperation.
"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the Fukushima nuclear crisis and will learn a lesson from the crisis," he said.
