Four people were sentenced to prison for producing and selling melamine-tainted milk powder in Hebei Province in north China on June 23, 2011, a local official said.

Cui Weizhong, legal representative of the Yongxing Dairy Co., was sentenced to prison for five years for blending 500 kg of melamine-tainted milk powder into the company's products over the past two years. Cui was fined 150,000 yuan (23,000 U.S. dollars) and his company was fined company 250,000 yuan.

Liu Dan, a technician of Cui’s company, was given a three-year sentence for assisting in the production of the tainted milk powder. Liu was fined 100,000 yuan.

Dang Yao and Mi Pengyong, who sold contaminated milk powder to Cui in 2009, were sentenced for three years and 18 months in jail respectively. They were both fined 10,000 yuan.

The country has enhanced food safety checks following a string of scandals such as the melamine-tainted milk powder discovered in 2008 and the clenbuterol-tained pork products discovered earlier this year.
