China's Ministry of Public Security in an emergency meeting held Sunday night ordered tougher road safety checks, especially for long-distance passenger buses, in a bid to prevent major accidents.

The ministry also urged scrutiny on overloading and drowsy driving.

Measures should be enhanced to ensure road safety during the ongoing foggy weather that has swept many parts of the country, said Huang Ming, vice minister of public security, at the meeting.

Huang noted that road traffic has been on the rise recently in many regions, making it necessary to upgrade management initiatives.

The move came after several deadly traffic accidents happened across China over the past ten days.
