The death toll climbed to eight, after firefighters found the body of a woman at midday in the debris of the restaurant.

Seven other deaths were reported at two hospitals, Gaoxin Hospital and the provincial People's Hospital, and the authorities have yet to identify the dead, the local government said.

Meanwhile, of the 31 injured, seven were in critical condition, the municipal health bureau said.

The explosion was caused by a liquefied petroleum gas leak and shattered windows in nearby buildings, blew away a bus stop sign and destroyed several cars parked in the neighborhood, according to a fireman at the scene.

The fireman said most of the victims were passers-by near the building, including school-bound children.

Rescue work ended at around 11 a.m. and all of the injured have been sent to Gaoxin Hospital and the Provincial People's Hospital for treatment, a spokesman with the municipal government of Xi'an said. A doctor at Gaoxin Hospital said many of the wounded received head injuries.
