A Mafia-style gang led by a former public prosecutor in northern Shanxi Province was destroyed and 51 gang members were detained. Meanwhile, 68 civil servants were punished for assisting the gang, China National Radio reported today.

Shanxi authorities said Ma Feng, a former official of Yongji City People's Procuratorate, operated the 55-strong gang that committed 13 kinds of crimes from intentional injury to extortion, firearms trafficking and tax evasion.

Prosecutors found that 68 civil servants in local government departments, including some policemen, had violated the laws and assisted Ma in his illegal activities. Twelve of them will be indicted after investigations are finished.
