Rescuers in Guangdong Province are searching for five children missing after a flood, local authorities announced Saturday.

The primary school students, four from Huazhou city and one from Xinyi city, were washed away by flood waters on their way to school on Friday, said He Guoqing, an official of the provincial government.

Torrential rains have been sweeping across the province for the last three days.

According to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters, 235,100 people in 23 counties have been affected by the storms, and 13,300 people have been relocated.

About 23,120 hectares of crops were damaged and 379 houses have been toppled by the extreme weather.
