Five people have been killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in east China's Shandong Province early Saturday, local authorities have announced.
The accident happened around 3 a.m. in the coastal city. One resident died after jumping off the building to escape and another four were suffocated to death by heavy smoke, according to the city's public security bureau.
Rescuers rushed to the site shortly after the accident to distinguish the fire. Three trapped people were rescued and the building was evacuated of more than 30 people.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
