A senior official with the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) says that the organization has not experienced a sharp drop in recent donations, the Beijing Morning Post reports.
According to the report, the RCSC held an open day to the public on Wednesday for the first time in Beijing. Zhao Baige, executive vice-president of the RCSC, said at the event that only individual cash donations have dipped and that donations from businesses, international groups and ones made via mobile phones have remained steady.
Zhao said the dip was attributed to the fact that no major natural disasters have occurred within a year and added that the RCSC has not been affected by last year's "Guo Meimei" affair.
In 2011, a young woman known as 'Guo Meimei' claimed to be the general manager of the 'Red Cross Chamber of Commerce' while flaunting her lavish lifestyle on Sina Weibo, China's microblogging platform. The incident led to widespread questioning of the internal management and credibility of the RCSC.
The RCSC is now designing a public information system to improve the group's transparency and accountability. Expected to be operating later this year, the system will collect donor information from government departments, public institutions and other organizations. The information will include annual donation statistics and amounts as well as how the funds are used.
Sources from RCSC also said that it would organize seven specialized teams within five years devoted to search and rescue, water rescue, public health, psychological health and emergency water supplies.
