China will conduct an investigation into the death of a Nigerian citizen as soon as possible in accordance with Chinese laws, said a Foreign Ministry spokesman Thursday.

"The Chinese side will provide information to the Nigerian side and help them to appropriately handle the issue," spokesman Hong Lei told a regular press briefing about a Nigerian citizen who died after being taken to local police station after a dispute in the southern city of Guangzhou on June 17, according to Chinese media.

Hong said the relevant departments in Guangdong province have contacted the Nigerian embassy to China on the issue, and confirmed the nationality of the deceased.
