The number of China's seriously violent crimes has slightly dropped compared to the same period last year, the Supreme People's Court (SPC) said Friday.
Zhang Jun, vice president of the SPC, said at a meeting on criminal trials that the number of attempted murders that were appealed had dropped by 2.31 percent year-on-year, the number of kidnapping had dropped by 10.53 percent, while robbery cases had decreased by 8.91 percent.
Zhang added that people's sense of security had steadily risen and the public security situation remained generally stable.
Zhang stressed that courts at all levels must unswervingly implement the policy of strictly controlling and cautiously applying the death penalty, and prudently rule on and review death penalties according to law.
He urged all courts to properly handle sensitive cases and pay more attention to work that concerns the common people.
