A freak lightening strike killed 143 goats during a torrential thunderstorm in Chagankule village, Xinjiang, on July 10. 



A freak lightening strike killed 143 goats during a torrential thunderstorm in Chagankule village, Xinjiang, on July 10. The goats, who were taking shelter from the downpour, died instantly and a further 30 were washed away by flood waters. The animals were owned by a local farmer, whose losses have been estimated at 200,000 yuan.

The thunderstorm, which initially hit Hebukesaier village, Tacheng Prefecture, triggered torrential flooding, causing varying degrees of damage in 6 surrounding villages and town. Chagankule village and Motege village were worst hit, suffering damage estimated at of 23 million yuan.

Besides the affected livestock, hundreds of residents were also trapped by the deluge, which also caused significant damage to a number of surrounding roads, as well as farmland, grassland and dams.

The thunderstorm, which began at approximately 1 p.m., lasted for several hours. There are currently no reports of human casualties or structural collapses.
