The accident occurred at 5:28 a.m. when a freight train knocked down a group of villagers who were walking on a railway bridge in Funing county in Qinhuangdao city, the city's publicity department said in a press release. Because a nearby road was damaged by torrential rains, the villagers climbed over the railway guardrail and walked along a section of the Datong-Qinhuangdao railway, the country's main coal-transporting railway, the release said.

The four injured has been sent to a local hospital for medical treatment.

A further investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
