An appeal filed by an unorthodox medical professor serving prison time related to the use of his sperm to help "cure" women has sparked new controversy in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
'Sperm cure' doc's conviction appeal sparks controversy |
The 47-year-old professor and doctor appealed to a higher court after he was sentenced to four years behind bars for rape last year, according to Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News.
Since his recent appeal, some of his former female patients have spoken out in his support, while other doctors have expressed skepticism.
A woman reported the man to police after he introduced his sperm into her vagina as "secret prescription" to cure her gynecological disease.
The professor, identified as "Ma Lin" with a hospital in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, claimed to have discovered a new way to cure gynecological disease after spending years of study in traditional Chinese medicine, the newspaper said.
Ma mixed human sperm, the antibiotic erythromycin and saline solution to make his own "secret prescription" and used it as medicine to massage around his female patients' vaginas to cure disease, according to the newspaper.
He had treated female patients with the prescription since 2003 as a way to study the use of human sperm against gynecological diseases until he was arrested by police for raping a patient.
He was arrested on August 25, 2010, when he treated a woman, Wang Juan, at his apartment for pelvic inflammation. According to the newspaper report, he said he accidentally applied medicine with his sperm into the woman's vagina during the massage. Wang was shocked to find the sperm in the toilet and reported it to police. In March of last year, Ma was charged with rape and sentenced to four years behind bars.
In September, Ma appealed to a higher court and claimed that he didn't have sex with his patient. The court didn't announce a verdict, the newspaper said.
The appeal sparked controversy as many of his female patients came forward to testify for him. Some said in court that his secret prescription has been very effective against their gynecological diseases and they claimed that they had not been molested by the professor.
Luo Jie, one of the female patients treated by Ma, said that the doctor used the prescription to massage around her vagina in curing her headache and stomachache, the newspaper said. Another patient, Liu Hua, said the prescription could even be used to heal a bruise she had after falling from a motorcycle in 2007, the newspaper said.
Doctors, however, doubted any scientific basis for Ma's prescription and showed concern that it might infect his patients with other diseases.
