Jiangxi traffic police posted a notice on their official Weibo microblog at 6:15pm on Sunday, urging drivers to cross the river by other bridges as the Jiujiang Bridge had been closed for repair.
Two hours later, the police updated their notice, saying the bridge was only open to passenger vehicles weighing less than 20 tons, the Jiangxi Daily reported.
During their routine check on the bridge on Sunday, maintenance workers found cracks at the joint of the road span and a pier. The Chinese Academy of Railway Sciences has been asked to provide a repair plan by Wednesday.
Jiangxi police also advised vehicles from Guangdong Province to take the Daqing-Guangzhou Highway to go to Hubei and Henan provinces or the Ji'nan-Guangzhou Highway to go to Anhui Province.
Vehicles from Hubei can take Highway G45 or G56 to go to Jiangxi, the police added.
