Former NBA superstar center Yao Ming accepted an honorary doctor's degree at the University of Hong Kong's 187th Congregation on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reports.

According to an announcement from the University of Hong Kong, Yao was given the honorary PhD in sociology due to his contributions in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and education on an international level.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Leung Chun-ying, who is also the Chancellor of UHK, hosted the ceremony.

Seven-thousand five-hundred and sixty-six bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees were presented at the event.
