A bank official has gone on trial, charged with killing his newly-wed wife after she found out about his extra-marital affairs, the Beijing No. 2 People's Court said.

The official had claimed that his wife had been killed by a burglar.

Niu Xuehui, 34, a customer service section chief of an unidentified bank, and his wife, a 31-year-old civil servant surnamed Li, held their wedding ceremony in March this year.

While on honeymoon in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, Li accidentally found romantic messages on her husband's mobile phone, Beijing Morning Post reported yesterday.

The furious wife then confronted her husband but didn't get any response.

After returning home to Beijing, the couple had a fierce quarrel. While Li was sleeping that night, Niu struck her head with a wooden vase and strangled her to death. Later, he destroyed all evidence and created a scene of burglary, the paper said.

Niu stayed calm and went to work the next morning. He called police after finishing the day's work and returning home, claiming a burglar had broken into his house and killed his wife.

Initial findings indicated that only Niu and Li had entered the room and there were no other footprints. Niu eventually admitted to the crime, the paper said.

Prosecutors said Niu should be severely punished for the intentional homicide.
