Public concerns have been raised about a poverty-stricken county in Central China's Hubei province that used 1 million yuan ($160,000) to build a giant ox statue, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported.

Yunxi county in Shiyan city is among the most impoverished counties listed by the State Council's poverty alleviation and development office.

Yunxi county placed the landmark statue of the reclining ox at a public square in August 2010. Made of pure copper and weighing 12 metric tons, the ox stands for diligence, endurance and sacrifice, according to a sign near the statue.

The ox, which is 5.9 meters wide and 2.7 meters tall, is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.
