A malfunctioning part was confirmed to have caused a molten iron spill accident that occurred in a Baosteel workshop in Shanghai last week, killing two and injuring 13, authorities said Wednesday.
Investigators found that an L-shaped block component failed to stop a crane carrying molten iron, which then came off its tracks and spilled on workers, a municipal government spokesman said at a press conference.
The cause of the malfunction is under further investigation, the spokesman said.
The accident happened around 9:20 a.m. last Monday, when workers were clearing molten slag.
Four of the injured are in stable condition, the spokesman said.
Baosteel is China's largest listed steelmaker.
