China has been cracking down on erroneous maps in both print and digital forms, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.
Relevant government agencies have handled 1,800 cases involving map irregularities and confiscated 750,000 maps since 2005.
The administration said as China is involved in several disputes with neighboring countries, it is vital to raise public awareness of the country's due territory, adding that the boom of the geoinformation industry has made regulating the map market more complicated.
The statement also said a campaign to crack down on map-based GPS products will be carried out soon and surveying authorities will compile a prototype online map for public services.
