Masked traffic police in Jinan |
With the recent thick haze looming over Chinese cities, traffic police in Jinan, capital of Shandong Province, have first taken to wearing masks whilst on duty on the morning of Jan. 30. This measure, thus far unparalleled in China, was implemented by the Jinan Municipal Public Security Bureau.
Fog and haze are running wild across China these days. "Police on duty in such bad weather conditions are working at the expense of their lives." Thirty seven percent of the traffic police caught a cold and nearly all the first-line traffic police experienced chest tightness and shortness of breath, according to the Jinan Municipal Public Security Bureau.
Therefore, people from all walks of life called for related departments to distribute masks to the traffic police on duty. In response to the general public opinion, the Jinan Municipal Public Security Bureau gave the idea the green light. At 10:45 a.m. on Jan. 30, the official Jinan Traffic Police blog released this news item.
The inverted-V shaped white masks can effectively protect a traffic police officer by covering the nose and mouth. One officer in central Jinan bought masks of his own accord and distributed them to more than 200 colleagues in his district.
The masked traffic police in Jinan were the first to appear not only in Shandong, but also in the whole of China.
