The Chinese Consulate General in Niigata confirmed Thursday that three sailors were killed after a Cambodia-registered vessel sank off Sado Island in Japan's Niigata Prefecture in the day.
The 296-ton vessel sank early Thursday morning in the waters 300 km northwest of Japan's Sado Island, with nine Chinese nationals and three South Korean people on board.
All the victims were rescued by Japanese Coast Guard and transferred to Niigata for medical treatment but three of them, including a Chinese and two South Korean nationals, died, the consulate said.
The Japanese Coast Guard sent two patrol vessels and two helicopters to carry out rescue operation after the consulate asked the Japanese side to rescue all the sailors.
