Recently, Guangzhou issued a poll regarding "sexual harassment in the public opinion in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou." Results showed that one out of ten 16- to 25-year-old women had at one point or another been a victim of sexual harassment. Nearly half of the respondents believed sexual harassment had increased over the past three years.
Mostly on buses and subways
Thirty-one percent of the respondents believed that sexual harassment cases had increased over the past three years and only 11% of them thought the number had declined. Among women aged 16 to 25, 48% of respondents held that sexual harassment occurrences had increased, a number close to half of all participants.
In their opinion, sexual harassment occurred mostly on buses and subways, followed by entertainment venues with their respective ratios standing at 44%, 38% and 35%.
62% are physical contact
In the survey, 3% of the respondents had suffered sexual harassment. The proportion with16- to 25 year-old women is higher, namely 13%.
The main form of harassment consists of physical contact, which is as high as 62%. Then follow verbal harassment, online harassment and mobile (phone) harassment by 31%.
39% of young women are frustrated with treatment
In regards to the handling of sexual harassment, the 26% of citizens reported being “dissatisfied,” whereas 33% deemed it “average.” Among them, however, 35% of young women expressed their dissatisfaction. In regards to the consequences sexual delinquents face, 52% of respondents expected them to be severely punished and 44% hoped to enhance specialized legislation.
Meanwhile, 52% of respondents do believe improvement of personal awareness is necessary as well.
