An exact replica of the iconic Titanic will be built in Daying County of western China's Sichuan province, according to Western China City Daily.

The project is part of the "Romantic Mediterranean Seven-star International Tourism and Resorts Zones"plan introduced at the 14th Western China International Fair on October 23. The project is sponsored by the Seven-Star Energy Group (SSEG).

The new Titanic will be a 1:1 scale replica of the original, which was 270 meters long with a maximum breadth of 28 meters. Her total height, measured from the base of the keel to the top of the bridge, was 31.7 meters.

Su Shaojun, chairman of SSEG, revealed that the company has spent millions of dollars merely on the blueprint of the original Titanic. "Due to poor preservation conditions, the blueprint fell into pieces after the ship's collision in 1912. Some of the pieces have gone missing and [others] are hard to restore. After years of efforts, we have now obtained the majority of the blueprint. We have the confidence to build an exact replica of the original,"said Su.

The original Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. However, the British passenger liner did eventually into the Atlantic Ocean on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York after colliding with an iceberg. Su said, "We recreate the ship not for travel; instead, it will be a chance for people from all around the world to experience life on the Titanic."

The construction of the modern replica of the doomed ocean liner will begin by the end of this year. According to a source close to the project, the crew of the 1997 James Cameron film "Titanic"are expected to attend the launch ceremony and the invitation has already been extended.

Xie Daiyin, Party chief of Daying County, was excited to learn about the new project. "The establishment of International Tourism and Resort Zones will provide a chance for people to go back in time and experience what it was like on the Titanic a century ago,"said Xie.
